How Much Food for a Luau? Free Luau & Party Food Calculator

Tropical fruit and party food buffet spread for a Hawaiian luau in Hawaiʻi

The Luau & Party Food Calculator is a free tool from kahana.shop that answers the question how much food for a luau you should buy, built by Kahana Designs, a Native Hawaiian–owned studio in Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi.

Planning a luʻau is exciting until you get to the shopping list. Too little kalua pork and your guests go home hungry; too much and you're eating leftover mac salad for a week. This calculator does the math for you — plug in your guest count, party length, and appetite level, and it hands back exact quantities for every category: proteins, sides, fruit, dessert, and drinks.

What is the Luau & Party Food Calculator?

It's a free, browser-based planning tool that converts your guest list into a shopping list. You enter the number of adults and kids coming, how long the party will run, how hearty your crowd's appetite is, and whether you're serving alcohol. The calculator instantly returns portions for kalua pork, huli huli chicken, poke, rice, macaroni salad, lomi lomi salmon, sweet rolls, fruit, dessert, and drinks — including ice.

How do I use the Luau Food Calculator?

  1. Go to the Luau & Party Food Calculator page.
  2. Enter your number of adult guests and kids.
  3. Choose your party length — short (2–3 hrs), full afternoon/evening (4–5 hrs), or all day (6+ hrs).
  4. Select your crowd's appetite: light, average, or hearty.
  5. Check the box if you're serving alcohol.
  6. Tap Calculate my luau to see your full shopping plan, broken down by category.

How much food do I actually need for a luau?

As a general rule, plan on about 1/3 to 1/2 pound of cooked meat per adult, roughly a cup of rice, and a half cup of each side dish. Because a raw pork shoulder loses close to 40% of its weight during slow cooking in the imu, you need to buy noticeably more raw pork than the final cooked weight suggests — the calculator builds that shrinkage into its numbers automatically so you don't end up short on kalua pork.

Is the Luau Food Calculator free?

Yes. It's completely free to use, with no sign-up required, from Kahana Designs.

A note on luʻau food and tradition

The luʻau as we know it today traces back to the 1856 celebration hosted by King Kamehameha V that blended the ancient ʻāhaʻaina (feast) with Western-style communal dining. Dishes like kalua pig cooked in an underground imu, poi pounded from kalo (taro), and lomi lomi salmon carry generations of Hawaiian food tradition. When you plan a luʻau today, you're taking part in that same spirit of feeding ʻohana and community generously — which is exactly why getting the portions right matters.

Feeding a crowd is only half the fun of throwing a luʻau — dressing the part matters too. Browse Kahana Designs' Food & Drink collection for island-inspired tees perfect for the host and the whole crew.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Luau Food Calculator free?

Yes, the Luau & Party Food Calculator from Kahana Designs is completely free to use, with no account or download required.

How much food do I need for a luau?

A good rule is about 1 pound of food per adult for the main proteins and sides combined, plus drinks. For a sit-down luʻau plan roughly 1/3 to 1/2 pound of cooked meat per adult, a cup of rice, and a half cup of each side. The calculator scales those portions to your exact headcount and party length.

How much kalua pork per person?

Plan about 1/3 pound of cooked kalua pork per adult as a main, or 1/4 pound if you're serving several proteins. A raw pork shoulder loses roughly 40% of its weight when cooked, so buy more raw than you need cooked — the calculator accounts for this automatically.

How many drinks per person for a party?

A common guideline is about 2 drinks in the first hour and 1 per hour after that. For a typical afternoon luʻau that's roughly 4 to 5 drinks per adult. Always have plenty of water and non-alcoholic options too, which the calculator includes.
