The Most Beautiful Beaches in Hawaiʻi

Aerial view of Hanauma Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaiʻi, on the island of Oʻahu

Ask ten people to name the most beautiful beaches in Hawaiʻi and you will get ten different answers — and every one of them will be right. Across the main islands you will find powder-white crescents, golden bays fringed with reef, dramatic black-sand shores born of lava, and remote stretches where the only footprints are your own. This guide walks through some of the most beloved beaches in the islands, what makes each one special, and how to enjoy them with the respect the ʻāina (land) deserves.

What makes a Hawaiian beach special

In Hawaiian culture the shoreline is more than scenery. The ocean, ke kai, is a source of food, a highway between communities, and a place woven through moʻolelo (stories) and family history. Many beaches carry names that describe the place or remember an event, and some sit beside heiau (temples) or fishponds still cared for today. When you visit, you are stepping into a living landscape. A little awareness — carrying out your trash, giving honu (sea turtles) and monk seals a wide berth, and never standing on coral — goes a long way toward keeping these places beautiful for the next generation.

Oʻahu: Lanikai and Hanauma Bay

On Oʻahu's windward side, Lanikai Beach is the postcard everyone pictures: soft sand, impossibly clear turquoise water, and the twin Mokulua islets floating just offshore. Sunrise here is unforgettable. A short drive away, Hanauma Bay curves inside an ancient volcanic crater, its sheltered reef making it one of the best snorkeling spots in the state. Because it is a protected marine life conservation district, reservations and an education video are required — a small step that has helped the reef recover.

Maui: Wailea and Kāʻanapali

Maui's leeward coast is lined with resort beaches that also happen to be genuinely gorgeous. The Wailea beaches on the south shore string together calm, golden coves perfect for swimming and sunset, connected by an easy oceanfront path. Farther north, Kāʻanapali Beach stretches for miles of soft sand below Puʻu Kekaʻa (Black Rock), a spot rich in Hawaiian legend and popular for its evening cliff-diving ceremony.

Kauaʻi: Poʻipū, Polihale, and the wild coast

The Garden Isle rewards those who explore. Poʻipū Beach on the sunny south shore is a friendly, family-favorite crescent where monk seals sometimes haul out to rest. For something wilder, Polihale on Kauaʻi's remote western tip is the longest stretch of sand in the state, backed by towering dunes and the beginnings of the Nā Pali cliffs — a place of enormous, quiet grandeur. Nearby, the undeveloped Māhāʻulepū coastline offers rugged sea cliffs and pockets of sand far from the crowds.

Hawaiʻi Island: black, white, and green

The Big Island shows off the full range of what volcanic geology can create. Magic Sands (Laʻaloa) Beach near Kailua-Kona is a bright white pocket beach famous for sand that can wash away and return with the seasons. Elsewhere on the island you can walk jet-black sand at Punaluʻu — where honu often bask — and even hike to a rare green-sand beach colored by olivine crystals. Along the lush Hāmākua Coast, hidden gems like Onomea Bay tuck sea cliffs and jungle right up against the water.

Tips for enjoying Hawaiʻi's beaches

  • Check ocean conditions before you swim — winter brings big surf to north shores, and currents can be strong.
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen to protect the coral you came to see.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean, and heed all posted warning signs.
  • Pack out everything you bring in, and leave shells, sand, and lava rock where they belong.
  • Give wildlife space — stay at least 10 feet from honu and much farther from monk seals.

Whether your idea of the perfect beach is a lively snorkel bay or an empty stretch of sand at the edge of the map, Hawaiʻi has a shoreline waiting for you. And when the trip is over, a piece of that coastline can come home with you. Browse our Beaches & Coast collection to find the bay or beach that captured your heart.
