The Kīhei coast stretches for six miles along Maui's leeward south shore, named (in some tellings) for the cape-like shawl the early Hawaiians wore. Because Haleakalā shelters this side from the wet trade clouds, Kīhei averages one of Maui's driest, sunniest microclimates — which means more sunsets witnessed, more golden hours that actually deliver. Across the channel, Lānaʻi and Kahoʻolawe sit dark against the burning sky.
