Morning on the Kona Coast smells like roasted beans and ocean — a sleepy little ribbon of coffee country tucked against the leeward flank of Hualālai. This is the only American soil where commercial coffee is grown at scale, and the beans here have a velvet smoothness that's hard to forget.

The Kona belt runs roughly twenty miles along the west coast of the Big Island, where volcanic soil, afternoon clouds, and cool nights conspire to make some of the most coveted coffee in the world. Beans have been growing in these hills since 1828, when Reverend Samuel Ruggles first planted cuttings from O'ahu. Generations of multi-generational coffee families — many of them Japanese, Filipino, and Portuguese descendants of plantation workers — still hand-pick each cherry red.
