'Īlioholoikauaua — "dog running in rough water" — is endemic to Hawai'i, the only seal species native to the islands. Roughly 1,500 remain, and their slow recovery depends on giving them undisturbed beach rest, distance from people and dogs, and intact reefs to forage. NOAA, state wildlife teams, and a network of volunteers do quiet, daily work so that pups born on main-island beaches have a fighting chance.
