Sitting along Maui's southwest coast, Kīhei stretches for six miles between Māʻalaea and Wailea. The trade winds pile rain on the windward east side, leaving Kīhei dry and leeward — sun on the kiawe trees, salt on the seawall, and a turquoise channel running out toward Lanaʻi and Kahoʻolawe. In winter, humpbacks (kohola) crowd that channel from December into May, breaching close enough to hear.
