The Story Behind Aloha Trails

Every trail crosses an ahupua'a, the wedge of land that ran mountain to sea in old Hawai'i, and walking them is a form of mālama 'āina — care for the land. Trailheads are often unmarked, the etiquette is local: pack out everything, leave the rocks alone, move quietly through sacred spaces.
