Kīhei stretches roughly six miles along Maui's southwest coast between Mā'alaea Bay and Wailea. Because Haleakalā catches the windward rain on its east face, Kīhei stays dry — the leeward side averages some of the most sunshine on the island. The 'Au'au Channel runs offshore between Maui, Lāna'i, and Kaho'olawe, and from December into May it fills with humpback whales (kohola), close enough to spot from the seawall at sunset.
