The Waikoloa Beach Resort area is built on the 1859 Mauna Loa lava flow, a vast field of black 'a'ā and pāhoehoe softened by ancient anchialine ponds and Hawaiian petroglyph fields at Pu'ako and 'Ŭ. The coast here is dry — the Kohala mountains pull rain to the windward side, leaving Waikoloa under near-constant sunshine. 'A-Bay's crescent of sand sits between two old fishponds, exactly where Hawaiian fishers managed mullet and 'awa for centuries.
