The Story Behind the Lahaina Banyan

Lahaina's banyan — planted in 1873 to mark the 50th anniversary of Protestant missionaries' arrival on Maui — grew over 150 years into one of the largest banyan trees in the United States, sheltering nearly an acre of downtown under its canopy. Though scorched in the 2023 Lahaina fire, it has been the focus of intensive care and is leafing back out, branch by branch — a living symbol of the town's endurance. The banyan was originally a gift from missionaries in India, where the tree is also held sacred.
