The island holds nearly every climate zone on the planet — alpine summit, dry leeward Kohala coast, wet windward Hilo rainforest, and the lava deserts of Ka'ū. Pele lives at Kīlauea. The 'io (Hawaiian hawk) flies only here. New land is born monthly along the southeast coast.
