The Story Behind Blue Hawaii

The drink itself was invented at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in 1957 by bartender Harry Yee, who needed something to do with a bottle of blue curaçao — the result was rum, pineapple, lemon, and that improbable turquoise. Elvis sang it into legend with the 1961 film of the same name, and from there "Blue Hawaii" became shorthand for the whole tiki-era island fantasy: pool deck, hibiscus print, ukulele drifting from somewhere unseen.
