The Story Behind Blue Hawaii

Blue Hawai'i lives in the exact moment when the ocean and the cocktail glass agree on a color. It's a wink at the tiki-era version of the islands — and a small, sincere love for it too.

The drink itself is a Waikīkī invention: Harry Yee, head bartender at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, mixed the first one in 1957 to feature a then-novel bottle of blue curaçao. Rum, pineapple, sweet-and-sour, and that improbable turquoise — it became the signature drink of mid-century Hawai'i, immortalized by Elvis in 1961 and never really retired. The shade itself became shorthand for the whole island feeling: pool decks, plumeria, ukulele music carried on warm air.
