Chicken Island Aloha Kauai v4 Hawaii T-Shirt
Kaua'i has chickens — lots of them — and this tee leans into the Garden Isle's best running joke.
The Story Behind Kauai's Chickens
Kaua'i has chickens. Lots of them. Roaming the beaches, parking lots, hiking trails — and this tee leans into the most beloved running joke on the Garden Isle.
The story goes that the wild chickens are descendants of jungle fowl brought by early Polynesian voyagers, mixed with farm birds that escaped during Hurricane 'Iwa in 1982 and Hurricane 'Iniki in 1992. Without mongoose on the island to thin them out, the population thrived. Today they're so ubiquitous in places like Hanalei, Kapa'a, and Po'ipū that locals just call them part of the scenery — and visitors leave with at least one good chicken photo.
For Kauai Lovers & Garden Isle Fans
For locals, the moa wandering through Costco parking is so normal it's a personality trait of the island itself. For visitors, this shirt is the inside joke you take home — a reminder that on Kaua'i, the alarm clock has feathers.
