The Story Behind the Crown Flower

Calotropis gigantea, the crown flower, takes its English name from the way each tiny bloom unfolds into the shape of a small five-pointed crown above a star-shaped base. Queen Liliʻuokalani — Hawai'i's last reigning monarch, deposed in 1893 — was especially fond of the pua kalaunu and often wore lei made from its flowers, threading the small crowns onto string. Today the lei is associated with her legacy, and you'll see it offered respectfully at events honoring the Hawaiian Kingdom and the queen's memory.
