Leahi — The Brow of the Ahi

Diamond Head is a tuff cone formed roughly 300,000 years ago when explosive contact between magma and seawater built the wide, low crater you see today. Hawaiian navigators called it Lēʻahi for its resemblance to the brow of the ʻahi tuna. Western whalers later renamed it Diamond Head after mistaking calcite crystals on the slopes for gemstones. The summit trail climbs through old military bunkers to a 760-foot rim that looks down over Waikīkī.
