The Story Behind Le'ahi

Lē'ahi (Diamond Head) is a tuff cone formed roughly 300,000 years ago from a single explosive eruption when magma met seawater along O'ahu's southeast coast. The Hawaiian name comes from the resemblance of the ridgeline to the brow of the 'ahi tuna. From the beaches and high-rises of Waikīkī, the crater looms eastward — a visual anchor that pulls every photograph toward it. The summit trail climbs 760 feet through old military bunkers to a rim that opens over the south shore reef.
