Long before scuba gear, Kanaka Maoli dove for pearl, fish, shellfish, and 'opihi on a single breath, reading bottom contours and currents with extraordinary skill. The discipline today combines old knowledge with new science — depth records, spearfishing tradition, ocean conservation. Hawaiian waters offer some of the most beautiful freedive grounds anywhere: lava arches, reef walls, and the deep blue just off the drop-offs where pelagics cruise through. The ethic is mālama: take only what you need, leave the reef whole.
