The Story Behind Front Street Lahaina

Front Street in Lahaina was, for a long time, the main artery of the Hawaiian Kingdom — its harbor, its capital, its center of trade. This Golden Lahaina Times tee honors that history with reverence.

Lahaina served as the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 1820 to 1845 under Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III. The harbor sheltered the Pacific whaling fleet at its mid-1800s peak, and Front Street ran along the water as the meeting point of ali'i, missionaries, sailors, and merchants. The town's banyan tree, planted in 1873, grew to shade nearly an acre. The 2023 fire devastated Front Street, and the work of remembering and rebuilding continues with the community.
