Kīhei runs along Maui's southwest coast in the rain shadow of Haleakalā, which makes it one of the sunniest places on the island. The beaches step down from north to south — Kalama, Kama'ole I, II, III, Keawakapu — each with its own personality. Offshore, the 'Au'au Channel runs out toward Lāna'i and Kaho'olawe, and in winter months (December through May) humpback whales arrive from Alaska to give birth and nurse calves in those protected waters.
