The Story Behind Waikoloa

Waikoloa Beach Resort runs along the South Kohala coast on the Big Island's western side, where the Kohala Mountains block trade-wind rain and leave the land in near-constant sunshine. The bay at the heart of the resort, 'Anaeho'omalu ("A-Bay"), is built around ancient Hawaiian fishponds that were once managed by ali'i to raise mullet and 'awa. Just south, Pu'ako and Mauna Lani hold petroglyph fields with hundreds of Hawaiian rock carvings still legible in the pāhoehoe.
