Hala Lauhala Hawaii T-Shirt | Hawaiian Aloha Tee, Kakau Tattoo Beach Shirt, Lauhala Weave Gift | Hawaii Vacation Gift for Ohana & Friends
Hala Lauhala Hawaii T-Shirt
Hala leaves, woven the way the kūpuna always have — into mats, sails, hats, and kakau.
The Story Behind Lauhala
Hala leaves, woven the way the kūpuna have always woven them — into mats, sails, hats, and now into kakau.
The hala tree (pandanus) grows along Hawaiian coasts with its stilt roots and spiked, sword-shaped leaves. Once stripped of thorns, softened, and rolled, those leaves become lauhala — the foundational weaving material of old Hawai'i. Lauhala mats lined every hale; lauhala sails carried voyaging canoes across the Pacific. The diagonal weave pattern in this design is the lauhala plait itself, translated into kakau geometry. It honors the makers — almost always wāhine — who kept this craft alive through generations.
For Lovers of Hawaiian Craft & Art
For locals, it speaks to anyone whose tūtū still weaves, or who remembers sitting on a lauhala mat as a kid. For visitors, it's a piece of Hawaiian craftsmanship you can carry home — a pattern with hands behind it.
