Haleakala Sunrise Hike — Hawaiian T-Shirt

Standing above the clouds on Haleakalā at dawn is one of the most humbling experiences on Earth.

The Story Behind Haleakala Sunrise Hike

Haleakalā — "house of the sun" — is a dormant volcano on the island of Maui that rises to over 10,000 feet above sea level. The pre-dawn hike to the summit is a pilgrimage for many: bundled against the cold, navigating trails through an otherworldly cinder desert, watching the sky transition from deep violet to gold as the sun rises above a sea of clouds below.

For Native Hawaiians, Haleakalā holds deep spiritual significance as the place where the demigod Māui is said to have lassoed the sun to slow its journey across the sky, giving the people more daylight to dry their kapa cloth. Standing at the summit as light floods the crater, it is easy to believe every word of that story.
