The Story Behind Haleiwa

Hale'iwa ("house of the frigate bird") sits on Waialua Bay and serves as the cultural hub of the North Shore. The town grew up around the sugar industry in the 1890s, and many of the wooden storefronts on Kamehameha Highway still date to that era. From here, surfers head east toward Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipeline, and Sunset Beach, the legendary winter break trio. Matsumoto Shave Ice has been a town fixture since 1951. The harbor sends out fishing boats and tour boats alike.
