The Story Behind Hanalei Bay

Hanalei means "crescent bay," and the half-moon of water faces north toward open Pacific. Behind the beach, the Hanalei River winds inland through taro fields that are still farmed by Hawaiian families — Hanalei is one of the largest taro-growing valleys in the state. The mountains rising behind the bay catch trade-wind rain and feed dozens of waterfalls visible after a storm. In winter, north swell brings big surf to the bay; in summer, the water turns glass-flat and warm.
