The Story Behind the Pina Colada

Hawai'i didn't invent the piña colada (Puerto Rico did, in 1954), but the islands gave it the perfect stage. Pineapple was the king of Hawaiian agriculture for most of the 20th century — Dole, Del Monte, and Maui Land & Pineapple turned Lāna'i, central O'ahu, and west Maui into vast spiky fields that fed canneries around the world. Coconut palms have lined Hawaiian shores for a millennium, since the first voyaging canoes. The piña colada is, in a small way, both halves of that history poured into the same glass.
