The Story Behind Hawaii Stargazing Mauna Kea

Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi rises 13,796 feet above sea level, placing its summit above 40% of Earth's atmosphere and almost all of its water vapor — making it one of the finest stargazing locations on the planet. The summit hosts some of the world's most powerful telescopes, including the twin Keck Observatories, which have contributed to landmark discoveries about black holes, dark energy, and exoplanets. On a clear night, the Milky Way is so vivid it casts shadows.

But Mauna Kea is far more than an observatory platform. To Native Hawaiians, it is Mauna a Wākea, a deeply sacred peak — the firstborn child of Sky Father Wākea and Earth Mother Papahanaumoku.
