The Story Behind Kona Coffee

The Kona coffee belt stretches along the leeward slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa on the west side of the Big Island. The microclimate — morning sun, afternoon cloud, cool nights, deep volcanic soil — is one of the most particular coffee terroirs anywhere in the world. The industry was largely built by Japanese plantation families who took over abandoned coffee lots when sugar pulled out in the 1890s; many of those farms have stayed in the same family for four or five generations. A good Kona roast is gentle: low bitterness, rounded acidity, a long clean finish.
