The Story Behind the Hawaiian Gecko

Geckos in Hawai'i are mostly introduced species — including the bright gold-dust day gecko and the chirping common house gecko — but they have become a familiar part of island life. They eat mosquitoes and small bugs, climb walls and ceilings with sticky toe pads, and produce the small chirps that anyone who has slept with the windows open in the islands knows by heart. In some traditions across Polynesia, the mo'o — lizard spirit — appears as a guardian of fresh water; the modern gecko carries echoes of that older spirit even though it isn't the same species.
