The Meaning of the Islands Kakau

The Hawaiian chain laid out the way it really sits — Hawai'i, Maui, Kaho'olawe, Lāna'i, Moloka'i, O'ahu, Kaua'i, Ni'ihau — but built entirely from kakau pattern.

Each island here is filled with traditional motifs: niho mano along the cliffs, enata in the valleys, ocean wave bands in the channels between. It's a map and a memory at the same time. The eight main islands were settled by Polynesian voyagers who navigated by stars, swells, and seabird flight — and the kakau they carried with them recorded those journeys on skin. To draw the islands themselves in kakau is to close the circle: the pattern crossed the ocean to find this land, and now the land wears the pattern back.
