The Story Behind the Monk Seal

'Īlioholoikauaua means "dog running in rough water," the Hawaiian name for the monk seal that is the only pinniped endemic to the islands. Roughly 1,500 individuals remain, and their slow recovery depends on undisturbed beach rest, distance from people and pets, and healthy reefs to forage. They are one of the few species found nowhere else on earth — Hawai'i is their whole world, and Hawai'i is responsible for keeping them in it.
