During Makahiki, every ahupua'a presented hookupu to the ali'i: pigs, kalo, kapa, fish, feathers — the abundance of the district carried in procession to the konohiki. But hookupu is not only a tax. It is offered today at heiau, at the foot of mountains being entered with respect, at the homes of elders, at the start of any work that asks for blessing. A wrapped ti leaf bundle placed on a stone wall is hookupu. A song offered before a hula performance is hookupu. The form changes; the intention does not.
