Maui is two volcanoes joined by a low isthmus — Mauna Kahālāwai (the West Maui Mountains) and Haleakalā, the House of the Sun. This tee honors the volcanic island shape that made Maui.

Haleakalā built the eastern two-thirds of Maui in massive shield-volcano fashion, and its 10,023-foot summit holds a crater more than seven miles long. The mountain has not erupted since the late 1600s, but is classified as active. Its rain shadow creates South Maui's leeward sun (Kīhei, Wailea) and pours rain onto windward Hāna and the road that leads there. In Hawaiian tradition, Māui climbed the summit to lasso the sun and slow its passage — to give his mother Hina more daylight to dry her kapa.
