The 'io is the only hawk native to Hawai'i and is found in the wild only on Hawai'i Island. In tradition, the 'io was a protector of ali'i — Hawaiian chiefs — and a powerful 'aumakua associated with royalty, vision, and high authority. The bird hunts small forest birds and rodents across the koa and 'ōhi'a forests of the Big Island, often spotted circling slowly above mauka slopes. Once endangered, the 'io has stabilized in recent decades, though its forest habitat remains under careful watch.
