The Story Behind the Mai Tai

It's always Mai Tai Time somewhere — preferably here, preferably now, preferably with the umbrella still in it. The drink is louder than its glass and softer than its punch.

The Mai Tai was invented in 1944 by Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron at his Oakland tiki bar, who served the first one to friends visiting from Tahiti. One of them tasted it and said "Maita'i roa ae!" — Tahitian for "out of this world, the best!" — and the name stuck. The original was rum, fresh lime, orgeat, orange curaçao, rock candy syrup. Hawai'i adopted it instantly during the tiki boom and turned it into the unofficial sunset drink of every resort lanai from Waikīkī to Wailea.
