Pe'ahi was a quiet stretch of coast until the early 1990s, when a handful of windsurfers and tow-in pioneers realized the swell that wrapped the point was something the world had never ridden. The Hawaiian name Pe'ahi means "to beckon," and the wave does exactly that — calling the most committed big-wave surfers on earth every time a serious North Pacific storm sends energy down. To paddle out here is to accept the ocean's full power; to ride here is to belong to a very small fraternity who can.
