The Story Behind Kaʻanapali

Ka'anapali means "divided cliffs" in Hawaiian, named for the volcanic ridge at Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock) that splits the beach. Pu'u Keka'a is sacred ground — Hawaiian tradition holds it as a leaping place for souls, where spirits departed for the ancestors. Today the cliff is a popular snorkel spot, and just offshore the 'Au'au Channel runs out toward Lāna'i and Moloka'i, filling with humpback whales (kohola) each winter from December through May.
