The Story Behind Kaanapali

Ka'anapali means "divided cliffs" in Hawaiian, after the volcanic outcrop at Pu'u Keka'a that splits the beach. In Hawaiian tradition, Black Rock is a leina-a-ka-'uhane — a sacred leaping place where the souls of the departed leave the islands to join the ancestors. Today the cliff is also one of West Maui's premier shore snorkel spots, and the long crescent of sand below was once Pioneer Mill sugarcane fields before becoming Hawai'i's first planned resort area in 1962.
