Kalo Taro Leaf Hawaii T-Shirt
The kalo (taro) leaf is a heart shape that means something specific in Hawai'i — family, lineage, the elder brother of the Hawaiian people themselves.
The Meaning of Kalo
In the Kumulipo — the great Hawaiian creation chant — the first child of sky father Wākea and Hoʻohōkūkalani was stillborn, and from the small grave grew the first kalo plant, named Hāloa-naka, "trembling long breath." Their second child, Hāloa, became the ancestor of all Kānaka Maoli. Kalo is therefore literally the older sibling — and the broad heart-shaped leaf is, in old understanding, a face you sit with at the table. The plant has been grown in loʻi (irrigated patches) across Hawai'i for over a thousand years.
For Culture Lovers & Ohana
For locals, it's a leaf you can identify from a moving car — the shape of kuleana itself. For visitors, it's the symbol that finally explains how deeply Hawai'i connects food, family, and land.
