Kanaka Maoli Hawaii T-Shirt
Kanaka Maoli — the true people of Hawai'i, descendants of Pacific voyagers.
The Meaning of Kanaka Maoli
Kanaka Maoli. The true people of Hawai'i. The descendants of voyagers who crossed the open Pacific and built a thousand-year-old civilization on these volcanic shores.
The term is both ancestry and assertion. It marks lineage back to the canoes that arrived from the southern Pacific, back through the oli and hula that carried Hawaiian thought through every generation, back through ali'i and maka'āinana alike to the Kumulipo itself. Today Kanaka Maoli is spoken with deep pride at sovereignty gatherings, in classrooms teaching 'ōlelo Hawai'i, and at family tables where the language has returned after a long silence. The two words name a people who are still here, still creating, still teaching.
