Where Kāne is fresh water and sunlight, Kanaloa is the dark blue beneath the canoe and the long, complicated currents the wayfinders had to learn. He is the akua invoked by voyagers leaving on open-ocean crossings and by lā'au lapa'au healers preparing the medicines that come from the shoreline plants. His sacred form is the he'e — the octopus — a creature that knows the deepest crevices of the reef and emerges only when it chooses to. Kanaloa is patience, depth, and the medicine that comes from listening to the sea.
