The Story Behind Kapalua

The name Kapalua means "two borders," for the two bays — D.T. Fleming and Kapalua Bay — that frame the resort area. The coast was originally Hawaiian fishing villages, then later one of Maui's earliest plantation pineapple operations under Honolua Ranch. Just north sits Honolua Bay, a Marine Life Conservation District and one of the island's premier surf and snorkel spots. The Cook pines along the resort grew tall enough to become a landmark visible from miles offshore.
