The Story Behind Kapalua

Kapalua means "two borders," named for the two bays — Kapalua Bay and D.T. Fleming Beach — that anchor the area. Long before the resort, the land was Hawaiian fishing villages, then Honolua Ranch's pineapple fields stretching across the headlands. The tall Cook pines that line the coast today were planted in plantation rows and grew to be visible from miles at sea. Just to the north, Honolua Bay is a Marine Life Conservation District and one of Maui's most legendary surf spots when north swells run in winter.
