The Story Behind Kauai Na Pali Coast

The Na Pali Coast on Kauaʻi's north shore is a place that defies description and rewards every attempt to reach it. The valley of Kalalau at the Na Pali's heart was once home to thriving Hawaiian communities who farmed taro in the valley floor, fished the rocky coastline, and built heiau (sacred platforms) on the ridgelines. Today only the wild remains — naiʻa (dolphins) surfing the bow waves of tour boats, white tropicbirds soaring the updrafts, and the eternal rhythm of waves against ancient lava.
