Koa Spears Hawaii T-Shirt
The koa spear — ihe — the warrior's instrument, cut from Hawai'i's most honored tree.
The Story Behind the Koa Spear
The koa spear — ihe — was the warrior's instrument, cut from the hardwood of Hawai'i's most honored tree.
Koa grows in the upland forests of the islands, slow and dense and dark-grained, and for centuries it was the wood chosen for canoes, paddles, weapons, and the bowls of ali'i. A koa spear was straight, balanced, and lethal — but it also carried the mana of the tree it came from, and the kuleana of the warrior who carried it. Spears were thrown, parried, and caught in hand-to-hand training (lua), and the same forests still grow today on Maui's high slopes and the Big Island's saddle country.
For Lovers of Hawaiian Heritage
For locals, this design honors a weapon whose wood still grows in the upland forests above home. For visitors, it is a souvenir of Hawaiian craft taken seriously — strength rooted in a particular kind of tree.
