The Story Behind the Kohola

From December through May, humpback whales (kohola) gather in Hawai'i after migrating roughly three thousand miles from Alaskan feeding grounds. They come to breed, calve, and sing — the males perform long, complex songs that evolve across seasons and are shared throughout the whole population. Hawaiian tradition holds the kohola in deep respect, associating it with strength, 'ohana, and the long memory of the deep. The migration is one of the longest of any mammal on earth.
