The Meaning of Ku

Among the four great akua, Kū represents the masculine, decisive force in Hawaiian cosmology — the counterweight to Lono's peaceful agriculture and Kanaloa's drifting ocean. Kamehameha I famously held Kūkā'ilimoku, the war form of Kū, as his personal akua during the unification of the islands. But Kū is not only a warrior. He is also Kūkā'ō'ō, the god of the digging stick, and Kū'ula, the god of fishermen — the same upright force that breaks the soil and pulls the net.
