The Meaning of the Kumulipo

A Kumulipo panel reads the way the chant itself reads — from pō (the night world) toward ao (the day world), one form of life after another emerging into being.

The Kumulipo is the great cosmogonic oli of the Hawaiian people, composed for the birth of a high chief and memorized in full by trained orators. It is structured in 16 wā (epochs), each one introducing new forms of life — first the deep-sea creatures and corals, then the land animals and plants, and finally the ali'i. What emerges is not just a creation story but a genealogy: kanaka are bound by kinship to every fish, every tree, every bird that came before them.
