The traditional Hawaiian calendar follows the mahina (moon) through 30 named nights, each with its own kapu and its own work — Hilo for new growth, Mahealani for the fullest face, Muku for the dark return. La (the sun) governs the macro seasons: Kau, the bright summer, and Hoʻoilo, the cooler rainy half. Together they shape kalo planting, deep-sea fishing, ceremony, and the rhythms of every ahupua'a from mauka to makai. To honor them is to honor time itself, kept in a Hawaiian way.
