The Story Behind Lahaina

From 1820 to 1845, Lahaina was the seat of the Hawaiian Kingdom under Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III. The harbor sheltered the Pacific whaling fleet at its peak in the mid-1800s. Front Street ran along the water as the meeting place of ali'i, missionaries, sailors, and merchants. The Banyan Tree planted in 1873 grew to shade nearly an acre. After the August 2023 fire, the work of remembering, restoring, and rebuilding continues — and the town's place in Hawaiian history is unchanged.
